Sucralose and stevia alter gut microbiome and may affect future generations
Researchers found that two widely used zero-calorie sweeteners — sucralose and stevia — altered the gut microbiome in mice, reduced beneficial bacterial compounds and changed gene activity linked to metabolism and inflammation. Some of these effects were detected in later generations that had never consumed the sweeteners. The findings raise questions about the long-term safety of these additives in humans.
