El Niño strongest on record, Pacific 4°C warmer than normal
El Niño has reached an intensity not seen since regular observations began — Japan's meteorological agency recorded temperatures up to 4°C above normal in the tropical Pacific. The World Meteorological Organization forecasts the phenomenon will continue to intensify, with its peak expected in December 2026.
