Green patch on a tomato — cut it off or throw the whole fruit away?

A green patch near the stem or on the side of a tomato indicates unripeness, not spoilage — it can safely be cut away and the rest of the fruit eaten. The decision depends on how large the green area is and whether other signs of spoilage, such as mould or an off smell, are present. If the green covers most of the fruit or other changes appear, the whole tomato should be discarded.
