DSM-6 to include biomarkers in mental illness diagnosis

The next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-6) will incorporate biological diagnostic markers alongside traditional interviews and questionnaires. Dr Anand Kumar, psychiatrist at the University of Illinois in Chicago and former member of the DSM Strategic Committee, explains that the changes will allow for more objective diagnosis of depression, PTSD and anorexia. This means that in the future, a physician will be able to base diagnosis in part on blood test results.
