Fish cans go in yellow bin: washing not needed
Fish cans—whether in oil, tomato sauce, or their own juices—belong in the yellow bin for metals and plastics, not mixed waste. Metal can be melted down almost indefinitely, so throwing it in the black bin wastes valuable material. Washing the can with detergent is unnecessary—foundry furnaces at hundreds of degrees Celsius burn off fat residue. Just empty the can, crush it, and tuck the sharp lid inside to avoid injuring sorting facility workers.
