Upper Colorado River Basin losing groundwater faster than expected

New research shows that four states in the Upper Colorado Basin – Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming – lost nearly twice as much groundwater during the 2020–2022 drought as states in the Lower Basin. This is a surprising finding, since the region was thought more resistant to drought due to heavier snow in the Rocky Mountains. Study author Esther Oyedele from Virginia Tech warns it may signal a turning point for the entire region.
