Light-activated opioids could relieve pain without side effects
Scientists are working on opioids activated by light, which would allow precise control over when and where a drug acts. Traditional opioids like morphine and fentanyl stimulate receptors throughout the body, causing constipation, tolerance, addiction and risk of respiratory arrest. The new approach aims to preserve pain-relief potency while reducing side effects.
