New Mexico seeks $35-40 billion from Meta for over 43 million violations
On October 1, 2026, New Mexico state attorneys filed in Santa Fe court seeking to impose a penalty of $35 to $40 billion on Meta. A jury previously found 26 of 29 analyzed Meta statements to be misleading on data privacy, hate speech, and disinformation. The number of violations of state consumer law was set at over 43 million, accounting for the reach of each false claim. Judge Francis Mathew will decide the final penalty amount.
