Newborn screening transforms SMA from fatal disease to chronic condition

Thanks to newborn screening programmes, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) can now be detected in Poland before symptoms appear. Over the first three years of the programme, more than 750,000 children were screened and 101 cases were identified — about 70 per cent of them had no symptoms yet. Early treatment, including gene therapy and bridging therapy, has transformed SMA from a death sentence into a chronic disease.
