Fleeing serfdom: punishment harsher than for murder
In old Polish serfdom, peasants who tried to escape their lord faced harsher penalties than murderers. The surveillance system involved not only the nobility and local officials, but also mutual informing among peasants themselves. Despite widespread exploitation and brutality, some peasants chose flight as their only chance at freedom.
