Fossilized mastodon tooth found at nature reserve near San Francisco

Paleontologists discovered an exceptionally well-preserved fossilized molar from an adult Pacific mastodon at the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space Preserve near San Francisco. The tooth initially looked like a "strangely shaped rock." Paleontologist Wayne Thompson of Pacific Paleontology assessed it as "the most beautiful mastodon molar" he had ever seen. The specimen was sent to scientists at Stanford University for radiocarbon dating.
