Allied bombing of Monte Cassino monastery, February 15, 1944

On February 15, 1944, Allied aircraft bombed the medieval Benedictine abbey at Monte Cassino. Americans and British believed the monastery was occupied by German forces, which they said justified the attack. The abbey's history dates back to the 6th century, and its strategic location on the route between Naples and Rome made it a target repeatedly over the centuries.
