Scientists discover why snake embryos twist into right-handed spirals

Scientists have found that snake embryos curl into a distinctive right-handed spiral because their bodies grow faster than their guts, creating tension that forces the elongating embryo to buckle and twist inside the egg. The conclusion was drawn from a study of more than 900 embryos using CT scanning to reveal the hidden anatomy behind the coils.
