Metformin may slow ageing, new research review suggests
A new review published in the journal "Aging" suggests that metformin, a widely used type 2 diabetes drug synthesised over 100 years ago, may also slow the ageing process. The drug activates the AMPK enzyme in cells, which in turn blocks the mTOR protein, triggering cellular repair mechanisms that go far beyond lowering blood glucose. The finding could represent a significant new application for one of medicine's most common medications.
