Xylitol in chewing gum and jam linked to higher stroke and heart attack risk

The largest study of its kind found that high blood levels of xylitol are associated with a significantly increased risk of major cardiovascular events, including stroke, heart attack and death. Xylitol occurs naturally in small amounts in some foods but is added at concentrations up to 1,000 times higher to products such as chewing gum, toothpaste, jam, yoghurts and ice cream. The findings raise concern given how widely the sweetener is used globally.
