Gut microbiome may shape how strongly you react to stress

Scientists have long known that genetics, personality and past experiences shape stress responses, but new research points to another factor: the gut microbiome. The community of microorganisms living in the digestive tract may influence how strongly the body and brain mobilise under pressure. Importantly, a stronger stress response does not necessarily mean a person handles stress worse. Researchers stress that the microbiome is just one piece of a complex puzzle.
