Flesh-eating bacteria cases surge in summer — death can come within a day
Necrotizing fasciitis, caused by so-called flesh-eating bacteria, is seeing a surge in cases this summer, with patients able to die within one to two days of symptoms appearing. The infection destroys soft tissue at a rapid pace and requires immediate surgical intervention. Doctors warn against ignoring wounds and abrasions, especially after contact with sea or fresh water.
