Brain's chemical "timer" tracks sleep and predicts waking

A study published in Nature suggests that chemical tags on proteins in the brain act as a biological timer that tracks sleep duration and can predict when an animal will wake. Research conducted on mice indicates these protein modifications could serve as a biomarker for sleep deprivation. The findings may pave the way for new diagnostic tools for sleep disorders.
