Intensive chicken farming is accelerating spread of campylobacter diarrhoea bacteria

A new study found a dramatic rise in the exchange of campylobacter strains between wild birds and farmed chickens as poultry farming has intensified, creating ideal conditions for the bacteria to mix, spread and acquire new traits. Campylobacter is the world's most common bacterial cause of diarrhoea. Researchers also warn of growing antimicrobial resistance in circulating strains, raising concerns about harder-to-treat infections in humans.
