Brain's chemical "timer" tracks sleep debt and predicts waking

Mouse studies published in Nature found that chemical tags on brain proteins act as a biological sleep timer, measuring the depth of sleep deprivation and predicting when an animal will wake. The findings raise the prospect of developing biomarkers for sleep deprivation in humans. Researchers suggest these protein modifications could serve as a precise indicator of how well the body has recovered during sleep.
