A Cyclospora cayetanensis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce has expanded to nine US states — Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia — with over 1,900 people sickened. Federal health officials have not yet officially identified the contamination source, though North Carolina authorities have pointed to cilantro and parsley in separate parallel outbreaks. The parasite enters the body through contaminated food or water.
