1,000-year-old Peruvian mummy mask made with real human hair and toxic cinnabar

A carved wooden mask made by Peru's Chancay people (circa 1000–1450 CE) has been identified, decorated with real human hair, a textile headband and red cinnabar paint containing mercury. The mask was placed on mummy bundles, in which the dead were wrapped in textiles and animal skins and buried with grave goods. The Chancay lived along Peru's central coast during the Late Intermediate Period.
