Sea "Vanished" for 40 Minutes on Croatian Coast in Rare Seiche Event
On the night of July 14–15, the coasts of Dalmatia and Kvarner were struck by extreme sea level fluctuations known as a seiche. Water in harbours first rose more than 30 cm, flooding restaurant terraces, then dropped 60 cm below normal, causing the sea to literally "disappear" for 40 minutes and leaving boats stranded on the seabed. The phenomenon hit hardest around the Zadar archipelago, the Kornati islands, Mali Lošinj and Stari Grad on the island of Hvar; some tourists feared a tsunami, but the event was triggered by a violent storm.
