Newly Discovered Australian Spider Catapults Ants With Ballista-Like Trap
A newly discovered spider species in Queensland, Australia's rainforests builds a snare trap that works like a Roman-era ballista weapon. The trap catapults green tree ants into a web suspended 30 centimetres above, leaving them helpless. It is the first known animal to use such a projectile-launching mechanism to capture prey.
