French court blocks trial over chlordecone pesticide scandal in West Indies
A French court has ruled against holding a trial over the use of chlordecone, a toxic insecticide used in the French West Indies from 1972 to 1993. The substance was flagged as potentially carcinogenic as early as 1979, but a special decree allowed it to bypass a ban introduced in 1990. The health scandal has been ongoing for more than 20 years with no one held criminally accountable.
