Ancient Maya contaminated lakes with mercury from red paint

A new study of lake sediments shows that the ancient Maya accidentally poisoned water reservoirs with mercury by extensively using cinnabar — an intensely red mineral used as a paint pigment. Rainwater runoff carried cinnabar into lakes, where anaerobic bacteria transformed it into highly toxic methylmercury, which accumulated in the food chain. The Maya painted almost everything red: sculptures, walls, plazas, ceramics and the bodies of the deceased.
