Japanese tectonics may have created the Grand Canyon

New research published in Science suggests the Grand Canyon's formation was linked to tectonic processes 9600 km away, near Japan. The creation of a double subduction zone near Japan triggered a transfer of forces through the Pacific plate 6–8 million years ago, accelerating the rifting of Mexico and the formation of the California Gulf and the Baja Peninsula. These same forces ultimately shaped the Grand Canyon. The discovery may help better understand plate boundaries, where the strongest earthquakes originate.
