Man buried in Viking ship 1500 years ago had rare leprosy strain, DNA shows Danube origin
Around 1500 years ago, a man was buried in an oak boat on the northern coast of present-day Germany. New DNA research shows he likely came from the Danube region and was infected with an extremely rare leprosy bacterium. The grave contained objects from the Roman world, including a late Roman military belt. The discovery proves that people in late antiquity traveled enormous distances.
