Volkswagen posts 5.8 billion euro loss as Chinese brands capture two-thirds of market

Volkswagen reported a net loss of 5.8 billion euro in the third quarter, compared with 1.1 billion euro a year earlier, mainly due to write-downs on assets in China and Porsche. Combined sales by VW, BMW and Mercedes in China fell by roughly one-third between 2019 and 2025, to 3.87 million vehicles. Over the same period, Chinese brands' share of the domestic market rose from 37.8 to 65.3 percent. German carmakers are transferring not only production but also technology development to China.
