Wales has over 600 castles: one for every 35 square kilometers
Wales, covering just 20,779 square kilometers, boasts the world's highest castle density — over 600 structures, statistically one per less than 35 square kilometers. This abundance of fortifications stems from a turbulent history of conflict between Welsh rulers and England. The turning point came in the 13th century when King Edward I ordered construction of mighty strongholds, including Conwy Castle with its eight towers, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
