Cholera over the Vistula in the 19th century killed over half a million

In the 19th century, cholera epidemics regularly devastated Polish lands. The disease caused by Vibrio cholerae killed even half of those infected, in terrible suffering. Over several decades it claimed over 500,000 victims on the Vistula. For a long time, medicine had no effective cure nor understood the cause of infection.
