47-million-year-old fossil may explain when owls became nocturnal

A new owl species, Masillastrix blattophaga, was discovered in 2025 at Germany's Messel Pit, one of the world's most important fossil sites from the Eocene epoch. The nearly perfect skeleton is 47 million years old and belonged to a young bird. Remains of its last meal — a greenish-blue iridescent cockroach — were found in its stomach, suggesting this owl species was active during the day, not at night.
