US Marine Corps needs 9 additional amphibious ships

Commanders of the US Navy and Marine Corps agreed that 40 amphibious ships are needed to maintain three simultaneous Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments. The fleet currently has only 31 such vessels — the minimum number required by Congress. Efforts are underway to convince lawmakers to increase this number by 9 ships.
