Elizabethan shipwreck lock opened after 400 years: combination cracked with X-ray

A brass padlock from the wreck of the British merchant ship Ann Francis, which sank off the Welsh coast in 1583, has been opened for the first time in over 400 years. Researchers at Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales used X-ray imaging to crack the four-digit combination lock. The lock was discovered between 1996 and 2017 by treasure hunter Peter Hughes along with other artifacts, including gold and silver coins. What the lock was protecting remains a mystery.
