Grizzly bear attempted to cross highway 46 times in 53 days

A young grizzly weighing 160 kg, called Lingenpolterer, attempted 46 times over 53 days between fall 2020 and spring 2021 to cross the four-lane Interstate 90 in western Montana. High-resolution GPS showed it moving parallel to the road, bouncing off the barrier like a ball. The bear eventually succeeded in crossing to the other side, likely under a river bridge. Scientists are now studying how grizzlies perceive landscape and how habitat fragmentation hampers their migration.
