Germany unearths 1,600-year-old remains with rare leprosy strain

Archaeologists excavating graves at a Roman settlement in northwestern Germany discovered a rare strain of Mycobacterium leprae in male skeletal remains. This strain has never before been documented in this part of Europe. The man was buried in a wooden boat with objects indicating high social status. Researchers suspect he may have been a mercenary in the Roman army who later settled in the region.
