Dinosaur skeletons fetch tens of millions of dollars at auction

In October, a Nanotyrannus lancensis skeleton named "Jodi" sold at Sotheby's auction in New York for $47.3 million — several times above the estimated value of $6–9 million. Earlier, in July, a T. rex called "Gus" reached $50.1 million, and in 2024 a stegosaur "Apex" sold for $44.6 million. Scientists and paleontologists warn that unique fossils are going into private hands instead of public collections, where they could serve science and future generations.
