Sokołowsko: Silesian sanatorium preceded Davos by 13 years

Sokołowsko in Lower Silesia opened a tuberculosis sanatorium in 1855 — the renowned Swiss resort Davos was founded only in 1868 and modeled itself on the Polish health resort. Patients from across Europe traveled to the town, and by 1888 it had postal and telephone service. Today historic villas are being revitalized and the ruins of Dr. Brehmer Sanatorium are being rebuilt by the In Situ Foundation; Olga Tokarczuk's novel "Empuzjon" also brought attention to the place.
