CERN reports first evidence of ultra-rare meson decay after 42 years
Physicists at the LHCb experiment at CERN have for the first time obtained evidence in a single study of the decay of a neutral Bd meson into a pair of muons — a process occurring once in 10 billion cases. The breakthrough follows more than 42 years of searching; advanced machine learning algorithms and new detectors played a key role. The discovery opens the way to searching for previously unknown particles and forces of nature.
