Cosmic radiation may cause heart scarring in astronauts

A study in rats published in PLOS One suggests that cosmic radiation at levels astronauts would face on a mission to Mars causes scar tissue to form around small blood vessels in the heart. This condition, called cardiac fibrosis, increases the risk of heart failure. Changes in rats were observed nearly a year after radiation exposure. The authors note that results from rat studies may not directly translate to humans.
