Chinese academic "factories" behind sudden spike in paper citations
Statistician Andrea Riebler from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology noticed suspicious growth in citations of her 2017 paper on Bayesian methods for cancer incidence forecasting — from 70 citations in 2024 to over 250 the following year. Investigation revealed the spike was driven by Chinese "scientific paper factories" that mass-cite selected articles. The phenomenon undermines the credibility of scientific metrics and university rankings.
