ECB leadership candidates must be nominated by November 6

Eurozone governments must put forward candidates to replace outgoing European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde by Nov. 6.

In a statement Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Eurogroup, the informal forum of eurozone finance ministers, said: “The Council of the EU has initiated the procedure for appointing a successor to the ECB President … Therefore, the President of the Eurogroup, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, has called on member states to send their nominations by Friday 6 November 2026.”

Lagarde announced last week that she would leave her post by Feb. 7, 2027, triggering a reshuffle at the top of the Frankfurt-based central bank.

Two other seats of the ECB’s executive board will also need to be filled next year, as Isabel Schnabel is joining the IMF in January and the central bank’s chief economist, Philip Lane, is set to end his term in May.

At their next gathering on Nov. 9, eurozone finance ministers will discuss the candidates and the process to fill all three open posts of the ECB executive board, an EU official told POLITICO.

However, the ultimate decision on the ECB President will be taken by the European Council, so heads of state and governments.

The two frontrunners to replace Lagarde are Spain’s Pablo Hernández de Cos and Dutchman Klaas Knot.
