IG Metall launches strikes in Germany: 3.7 million workers demand raises
German union IG Metall began warning strikes just after midnight Saturday in the metalworking and electrical industries, affecting 3.7 million workers. The union demands a 5% raise within 12 months, while employers offered a one-time payment of 1% of wages in summer 2027 and a 1.3% raise from July 2028 — which the union, given September inflation of 3.3%, assessed as a real wage cut. The strikes could hit Polish subcontractors in German corporations' supply chains.
