EU backs parliament's powers over Constitutional Court, strengthening Tusk's position
The European Commission supported the Polish parliament's authority to appoint judges to the Constitutional Court, bolstering Prime Minister Donald Tusk's stance in his dispute with President Karol Nawrocki. The Brussels intervention came after a nighttime confrontation at the Court's headquarters and political talks that produced no breakthrough. The Commission's spokesman said on Saturday that appointing judges falls within parliament's competence. The dispute concerns both control over a key state institution and how to restore the rule of law following PiS rule.
