Novaya Gazeta closes after more than 30 years: authorities forced the newspaper's end
Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta — one of the most prominent publications critical of the Kremlin — announced its closure after more than three decades of operation. The editorial staff cited unrelenting pressure from authorities as the reason. The publication was repeatedly awarded prizes and known for bold investigative journalism in Russia.
