34 years prison for monarchy criticism dressed as Harry Potter in Thailand
Thailand sentenced a man to 34 years imprisonment for questioning the monarchy during a protest in which he appeared dressed as Harry Potter. Since 2020, Thailand has brought charges under the lèse-majesté law against 294 people, with sentences reaching 50 years in prison. The law penalizes criticism of the royal family and is being applied increasingly broadly against participants in pro-democracy movements. The case has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations.
