Heating an empty house: when to turn off, when to just lower it?
Completely turning off heating when leaving home is not always cost-effective — the length of absence and type of installation are key. The smaller the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, the more slowly heat escapes, so it is often better to lower the setting by 2–3°C than to shut the system down entirely. With a boiler and radiators, lowering from 21°C to around 19°C during operation works well; heat pumps and underfloor heating require different settings. For absences shorter than two hours, changing settings yields minimal savings.
