Kremlin shut down Novaya Gazeta: 30 years of Russian free press ends
Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov announced the newspaper's closure, regarded as Russia's most independent and liberal media outlet. A day earlier, journalists were evicted from their Moscow headquarters occupied for 30 years. The editorial statement read: "We have been killed. On November 9 we will turn off the light in our home." The newspaper's closure is another step in eliminating independent media in Russia.
