AI's hunger for power: Amazon and Google buy nuclear reactor electricity for 20 years

Amazon has signed a 20-year deal for 690 MW of power from the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant in Maryland, and Google for 890 MW of new U.S. nuclear capacity. Constellation is investing over 4.3 billion dollars to modernize 11 reactors. Meanwhile, the Three Mile Island reactor is returning to operation — Microsoft has purchased its entire output for 20 years — and the U.S. government is loaning up to 4.4 billion dollars to restart three closed nuclear plants. Electricity demand from AI is growing faster than efficiency gains from newer chips can deliver savings.
