Zakopane: greed and lack of vision brought the city to the brink of collapse
Journalist Beata Sabała-Zielińska has published a book about Podhale in which highlanders speak about themselves without idealization. The author argues that the myth of the ideal highlander built in the 19th century during the partitions bears little resemblance to reality. In her view, Zakopane is destroyed by greed and a complete lack of vision — a combination that has brought the city to the brink of collapse. She stresses that Zakopane has never had a sound economy, from the very beginning of its tourist boom.
